For smoother, plumper lips

Lip Enhancement and Plumping Treatment

GERTIES lip plumping treatment helps to redefine lip contours and reduce fine lines around the mouth.

How does it work?

As we age, our lips become less plump and appear thinner - a result of losing the naturally occurring Hyaluronic Acid (HA) that normally helps to hydrate and add volume to our lips and skin.

The dermal fillers used for lip plumping are the same as the dermal fillers used to correct lines and wrinkles and are based on HA. At GERTIES we use Juvederm Ultra and Belotero, which are two of the newest ranges of fillers, and help to produce a smoother contour and feels soft and natural in the lips. Results last between six and twelve months.

Is it safe?

As with facial fillers, the risks are minimal. Improved techniques and new products have resulted in fillers becoming much safer. The filler substance can even be dissolved away with a special injection, should it really be needed.

What can I expect during the consultation?

We request that you submit a full medical history and will fully discuss your proposed treatment with you, placing our expert advice at your disposal.

An injection of local anaesthetic may be given into your gum, if required (similar to a dental injection), which numbs your lips and normally lasts between two and six hours.

GERTIES can also offer a dermal filler with an inbuilt anaesthetic, to further minimise any discomfort. Dr Kathy Rainsbury can advise you and discuss your requirements before proceeding.

The filler is then injected into your lips or your lip (vermillion) border with a very fine needle, instantly lifting the skin, smoothing lines and adding volume.

Initial swelling may last for up to a week. The result directly after the treatment is not the final result achieved. Associated swelling may cause your lips to look slightly uneven initially.

Occasionally minimal bruising can occur, which you can cover with makeup. Avoiding aspirin, ibuprofen and alcohol prior to the treatment and soon after will minimise the risk of bruising. The treatment takes about an hour, and you can go back to normal life afterwards, although we advise you to avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, sun beds, hot tubs and hot showers for 24 hours after treatment.
