Hyperhidrosis

Excessive underarm sweating

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. About 3% of the UK population suffer from excessive sweating underarms, palms and the soles of their feet. It can be very embarrassing, and not only ruin your clothes but also affect your social and love life.

What can I do about hyperhidrosis?

GERTIES offer a simple and effective treatment for underarm sweating. Botox® is injected just under the skin in several areas under each arm. It starts to work after about a week and can last up to 10 months. Clinical trials have shown that sweat reduction can be reduced by 90% after two weeks.

What happens during treatment?

Our experienced doctor will discuss your medical history and consent firstly, ensuring any queries you have are answered fully. You are then ready to go ahead with the procedure. Each armpit is numbed first with some local anaesthetic cream and then, with a very fine needle, a small amount of a solution of Botox® is injected into 10 to 15 places under each arm. The whole consultation takes about one hour.

Is it safe?

Yes. Botulinum toxin has been used safely and effectively in medical treatments since 1945.

Are there any side effects?

Minimal side effects such as redness, a small amount of swelling and, very occasionally bruising can occur. A small number of clients also report flu-like symptoms or compensatory sweating elsewhere, although this is infrequent. We don’t recommend you to have Botox® if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or have any egg allergies.
